Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and Sundays After Easter

As we begin Lent, I wish to share with you the message that I received this week from my home Diocese of San Diego. Bishop James R. Mathes has been my mentor and Bishop for more than 20 years.

“Beloved,

We begin on this day the season of Lent remembering our mortality within the context of the Eucharistic feast, a feast of hope in the resurrection to eternal life. Within the holy space that is Ash Wednesday, we hold these two realities in tension. This world is temporal and fleeting; we are citizens of a different realm which is eternal and imperishable.

And just as Jesus left the mount of the transfiguration and set his face resolutely toward Jerusalem, the cross and the empty tomb, today we set out on a spiritual journey, "a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting and self-denial; and by reading and mediating on God's holy word," (Book of Common Prayer, p. 265). On this path, we create different habits of the heart and soul.

I pray that you will nurture these habits for these 40 days. The grace that awaits us in an empty garden tomb is what gives us the courage on this day to go deeper, hear that we are dust and to dust we shall return, and live as mortals with an eternal promise.

May you have strength for your Lenten journey and walk with Christ toward a glorious Easter and beyond.”
